Made by hand in Buenos Aires
Crafted in Buenos Aires by Taller Galería Dawa, a ceramic studio in the heart of San Telmo, one of the city’s most artisanal neighborhoods, each mate features work by artisan Lucio at Taller and is individually hand-formed, painted, and kiln-fired. No two pieces are exactly alike, with unique brushwork, textures, and subtle variations in shape and finish.
How this mate got its name
Each mate has a Guaraní name, honoring the Indigenous people who first discovered yerba mate (Ka'a), the sacred plant.
The Guaraní are an Indigenous people of South America who first discovered yerba mate. For the Guaraní, yerba mate was more than a plant. It was deeply connected to their spiritual traditions and was regarded as a powerful, sacred plant.
We use Guaraní names for our mates as a way to recognize and honor the people and traditions at the roots of mate culture.
Hovyu (Hovyũ) means “dark blue / violet” in Guaraní. It’s pronounced hoh-vï-OON.
